We caught up with Millie to take a deep dive into what it’s like being a Laboratory Technician at our North West site. Here’s how it went…
How long have you worked at Olleco?
Four and a half years - I started off in 2021 as an apprentice completing a HNC in chemistry with LVL 3 lab technician. Once I had completed this course, I then continued my studies and gained my LVL 5 lab scientist qualification at the end of 2025 whilst working towards my HND in chemistry which is soon to be completed!
Tell us a little bit about the laboratory at Olleco…
Olleco’s laboratory is a quality assurance facility which assists the Production team in maintaining standards for a whole host of streams including biodiesel, anaerobic digestion (AD) and used cooking oil (UCO). As well as quality assurance, we provide scientific support to operations here at Liverpool and across all of Olleco’s services.
What appealed to you about working in science?
I wanted a job where no two days were the same and the science industry is perfect for this. As much as my job consists of routine daily analysis, there is always a problem that needs solving and the lab is a place for experimenting with solutions.
Talk me through your day…
My day mainly consists of routine analysis for biodiesel, AD and UCO. I complete quality assurance tests on different samples including finished biodiesel products, food waste, filtered UCO, effluent streams, etc. There’s a lot of analysis that goes into it. As well as preforming this routine analysis, I’m also responsible for lab procurement which includes consumables, service contracts and external analysis which are all crucial for smooth and efficient lab operations. Other duties such as maintenance, housekeeping and committees are also incorporated within my role.
What is one piece of advice you’d give someone who is looking to work in your role?
Before working at Olleco, I had limited lab experience and knowledge of this industry so don't be afraid to take a risk and jump into a new role. Never forget to stop and appreciate how far you have come.
