A day in the life of an Olleco General Manager

Olleco are a national business with a local approach. With a network of strategically placed depots, we serve over 50,000 food and hospitality businesses across the UK. Our depot teams have a deep knowledge and expertise of their local areas, working together to ensure that our customers are served reliably and efficiently.

We caught up with Adele to take a deep dive into what it’s like being a General Manager at our Yorkshire depot. Here’s how it went…

 

How long have you worked at Olleco?
I’ve worked at Olleco for 19 years. I came from a very different background as a Call Centre Manager for a large mail order company. I had been there for 24 years and I just fancied a change, so I applied to a Team Leader role at Olleco. To be honest I didn’t think I’d be here for very long, I was used to working with 300 to 400 hundred people daily. So, coming from a very fast-paced environment to a small office was a big change, but 19 years later I am still here!

How have you progressed from Team Leader to General Manager?
After Team Leader I went onto being the Sales Manager and eventually General Manager which has been my current role for the past seven years. I have had nothing but encouragement and support [from Olleco] on my journey.

What’s the first thing you do when you get to the depot?
The first thing I do when I arrive at the depot is walk round the car park and count the cars. Yes, strange I know, but if all the cars are in then I know I am in for a good day. It means all my drivers are out on their rounds and my team on site are ready to go!

Talk me through your day…
My day is very varied, no two days are the same which I love about this role. I’m always prepared for anything to happen as things can change very quickly, needing me to prioritise any urgent issues and to be there for my team. Running a depot means wearing many hats including the health and safety person, bank clerk, administrator, agony aunt, trainer and tea lady to name a few!

What is your favourite part of your role?
I enjoy every part of my role, but I do have to say I am very fortunate to work with an amazing team at the Yorkshire depot. From the warehouse team, sales, operations and drivers, they make my role and what I do more enjoyable. Having the right people round you and working together is key. I play a small part of running the depot, but they’re what keep the wheels turning.

What is one piece of advice you’d give someone who is looking to do your role?
For anyone who is thinking of progressing their career or maybe starting a new one like me, then I would say go for it! The role is rewarding and even though it can be challenging at times, you get to work with great people and always have any support and guidance you need from the business. You can do anything at Olleco if you have the drive, passion and determination.
