It’s easy to talk about sustainability, what isn't so easy is being able to quantify your achievements. This is why we have chosen to use the Carbon Trust to measure our results for us. The Carbon Trust Triple certification gives us an independent verification and gives you the confidence to know we are actually making the reductions we say we are.
The certification recognises organisations that successfully measure, manage and reduce their greenhouse gas emissions, water use and waste, demonstrating leadership within their industry by making real year-on-year progress.
We have been awarded the certification together with our parent company, ABP Food Group. At Olleco we are on a continuous journey to reduce our current and future impact on our natural environment.
With the introduction of the ‘Doing More With Less’ across the ABP Group, we've pledged to achieve the following by 2020:
- Reduce water usage 10%
- Reduce energy usage 20%
- Reduce our carbon footprint by 20%
- 100% by-product recovery
- Ensure zero is sent to landfill
And across the Group we are already making great progress. So far we have introduced:
- Heat recovery technology
- Leading edge water waste treatment facilities
- Rainfall harvesting
- Water recycling
- Measuring and monitoring programmes
We've also increased our recycling of material by 3,039 tonnes and reduced our landfill waste by 4,4486 tonnes.
As a result of our efforts, the Carbon Trust Standard has recognised our progress as an industry leader by awarding us their triple certification.
- 2013 reduced Greenhouse Gas emissions – we have reduced our Group Co2 footprint by 6,797 tonnes or 4.4%
- 2013 reduced annual water usage – our Group water usage has been reduced by 7.1%
- 2014 reduced waste output – our waste reduction stands at 6,488 tonnes or 9.6%
Here at Olleco we have played a big part in this success. By recycling our customer’s used cooking oil and food waste, we not only ensure nothing is ever sent to landfill but the building of our own Anaerobic Digestion plant means our biodiesel can be calculated to show a saving of close to 100% Greenhouse Gas emissions!
In addition to this, we are ISO and ISCC certified and our fleet is more carbon efficient than most. Our vehicles are fitted with fuel reducing features and our food waste vehicles have an electronic bin lift which means their engines aren't left running whilst on site.
