Why the new regulations are good news for everyone
The UK food and hospitality sector produces 1.2 million tonnes of food waste every year. Food waste from restaurants is responsible for over 20% of this and the way you deal with yours will have a huge bearing on the health of your business as well as the health of our planet.
Food is estimated to be responsible for around 30% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions. And food waste is one of the biggest contributors to those emissions and a significant cause of global warming.
As it breaks down in landfill, food gives off methane – a greenhouse gas 25 times more damaging to the environment than CO₂. If it is incinerated, it is second only to coal-fired power stations in the emissions it creates.

Landfill tax means it now costs well over £125 per tonne to dispose of general waste in a landfill site whereas it costs less than half of that to take food waste to an anaerobic digestion plant.
