The law is changing

From 1st April 2025, it is a legal requirement for businesses to segregate their food waste so it can be collected separately by an approved contactor who will process it sustainably. This brings England into line with Scotland, where separate food waste collections have been a legal requirement for 11 years, and Wales, where Regulations came into force in 2024.

As one of the UK’s leading food waste collectors, Olleco has offered a national food waste collection service since 2012. We operate a network of Anaerobic Digestion (AD) plants across the country and, because AD is the Government’s preferred outcome for food waste, we are the natural choice for businesses wanting to do the right thing.

Our food waste collection services are already widely used by environmentally-aware businesses across England and our innovative approach to food waste and bespoke solutions has won us clients and awards throughout the UK. As a result, we are ideally placed to give you the best food waste collection service currently available and we can set up your new food waste collection seamlessly.

Guaranteed fees for your first year’s food waste collections

Because we are one of the UK’s leading commercial food waste collection providers, and we own and run our AD plants, we know exactly how much it will cost us to collect and process your food waste. As volumes of food waste go up, there may be market fluctuations in food waste disposal that will affect other businesses but we are in a position to guarantee the price you pay for your food waste collection.

Award-winning solutions from the UK’s most innovative food waste collectors

At Olleco, we have developed an enviable reputation for providing industry-leading initiatives and innovations. Our cooking oil delivery and collection service is the market leader in the UK and our flagship biorefinery is a significant contributor to the UK’s biofuel industry. We have pioneered food waste collections as more and more businesses have recognised the advantages of separating this valuable resource from their general waste.

In recent years, we have invested in a fleet of bespoke food waste collection vehicles which can handle both liquid and solid food waste. As a result, we were chosen to partner with the National Trust in Wales to resolve difficulties arising from waste milk in their cafes and restaurants. Following a successful trial, we rolled out our food waste service across all of their properties in England and Wales and the project led to our winning Green World Environment award in 2025 and Green Apple Awards in 2024.

We pride ourselves in rising to any food waste challenge so, whatever issue you may have with your food waste, we will have a solution to resolve it, whether that is dealing with packaged food waste, fluid food wastes or providing smarter storage solutions.

Why the new regulations are good news for everyone

The UK food and hospitality sector produces 1.2 million tonnes of food waste every year. Food waste from restaurants is responsible for over 20% of this and the way you deal with yours will have a huge bearing on the health of your business as well as the health of our planet.

Food is estimated to be responsible for around 30% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions. And food waste is one of the biggest contributors to those emissions and a significant cause of global warming.

As it breaks down in landfill, food gives off methane – a greenhouse gas 25 times more damaging to the environment than CO₂. If it is incinerated, it is second only to coal-fired power stations in the emissions it creates.

The benefits of England’s new Food Waste Regulations are not just environmental

Removing food waste from your general waste stream will have a significant effect on the amount you have to pay to dispose of it. Landfill tax means it now costs well over £125 per tonne to dispose of general waste in a landfill site whereas it costs less than half of that to take food waste to an anaerobic digestion plant.

Food is typically the heaviest component of your general waste so separating it out should help reduce your overall waste disposal costs.

The new Regulations could also help you reduce operational costs

Separating your food waste is the first step in a reduction strategy. We can provide you with data which will help you to audit and analyse the food waste you produce. As a result, many businesses find they can reduce the amount they spend on ingredients by not wasting as much. Avoidable food waste is estimated to cost businesses 52p per meal and tackling that has been estimated to save the average business over £10,000 per year. The UK’s Waste Resources Action Plan have some great ideas on how to do this.

You may worry that you don’t have space for extra bins to accommodate food waste but remember, you won’t actually be generating any extra waste and, ultimately you could be generating less. You can store the bins that we supply outdoors and there are kitchen equipment suppliers offering hygienic spacing-saving split bin solutions that you can easily deploy throughout kitchens and food service areas. We can also provide communications materials to engage and motivate your employees to welcome the new Regulations.

A truly national food waste collection service

  • We collect food waste from every imaginable organisation from local chip shops to major national restaurant chains, from schools, hospitals and prisons to luxury hotels. In simple terms, if you generate food waste, we’ll be happy to collect it.
  • Our collections comply fully with all of the UK’s food waste regulations. Your annual Duty of Care and Waste Transfer documentation will be provided by email (to save paper) and is included in the service charge, unlike other companies who typically charge an additional fee for this.
  • Our drivers are all supplied with handheld smart devices. These help streamline the process so new drivers know exactly where bins are and they also provide valuable data which helps us to optimise routes to ensure they are as efficient as possible.
  • Collections can be arranged for any frequency and we provide 120 litre, 180 litre and 240 litre bins free of charge as part of our contracts. Our customer service team can advise on the optimal solution to meet your needs and keep your costs down.
  • Wherever you are in the UK, you will find a Olleco depot nearby with a dedicated local team servicing a large number of customers in your area. Not only does that mean that your food waste is creating local jobs, it also enables us to be more agile in scheduling collections that meet your exact requirements. This unrivalled network gives us a real advantage over competitors with fewer depots and enables us to set up collections and get you legally compliant faster and more efficiently.
  • A dedicated Customer Service Team coordinates the work of the Food Waste Recovery Teams at each of our 14 UK depots ensuring you always get a local driver and only have a single number to call.

Olleco keeps the carbon footprint of your waste to a minimum

Our national network of licensed anaerobic digestion (AD) plants allows us to minimise the miles your food waste has to travel and our fleet of highly efficient food waste collection vehicles helps minimise the impact of those miles. As well as reducing the carbon footprint of your waste, this also ensures that the energy it generates is fed back into your local community and the organic fertiliser can be fed into local farms.

If your business produces more than 10 tonnes of food waste per week, you may benefit from our bulk food waste collection service.

We’ll make the most of your food waste

All the food waste we collect is processed through anaerobic digestion facilities. Because this process produces renewable energy as well as organic fertiliser, it delivers greenhouse gas savings that are six times higher than composting.

This means we can promise you that your collection will comply with the Government’s preferred environmental outcome, unlike other food waste collection services which may send your food waste for in-vessel composting (IVC). What could be more rewarding than knowing that your food waste is creating renewable biogas and electricity and improving the nation’s energy security.

If our AD plants processed all the UK food and hospitality industry’s food waste, we could supply electricity to every home Leeds.

The Government has given their new Recycling Regulations the title “Simpler Recycling” and with our help, it really couldn’t be simpler. Just call for a quote and we’ll have you legal in no time.
